I need to buy a new computer. I know nothing about computers. For the love of god, someone recommend a good laptop. What is your dream computer, why? I want something that I know will be reliable for at least 3 years (a lifespan of a computer, or so NPR told me). The first month I had my Compaq, which has now completely stopped working; it was already making my life miserable. I would pay a lot of money for a computer that would turn on every time, not go off when I didn’t want it to, and would be okay with my running more than 2 programs at a time. I’m thinking of going to Macs, everyone I know who has one is extremely dedicated to it and seems concerned that anyone would use anything else. Every professor I had who brought a computer to class brought a Mac, which seems like an indication of something.
So please, any suggestion will be welcome.

for macs, check out http://www.apple.com/education/backtosch
There are a lot of reasonably good review sites on the internet. I don't have the time to look up links right now, but you can probably find it through google.
A lot depends on what your price is. If you're willing to shell out $3000, your chances of getting a damned good computer are pretty good. I'm guessing that's not the case, though.
I will say that my bottom-of-the-line Dell Inspiron 1000 runs less than $1000 (somewhere between $600-$900 depending on specials) and has not given me any problems thus far . . .
